A new documentary series released by the Qatari media company Al Jazeera portrays Swedish authorities as unjustly taking children from families based on ambiguous criteria, such as children wearing dirty or torn clothing or families lacking financial stability. This depiction bears similarities to earlier conspiracy theories suggesting that Swedish authorities were “kidnapping” Muslim children, which contributed to heightened security threats in Sweden.

The series features several Swedish participants, including a couple in southern Sweden whose seven children were taken by authorities. The father claims their children were removed due to their Roma background. However, court documents reviewed reveal that the children were taken for reasons such as irregular school attendance, hunger, and exposure to psychological abuse. Another Swedish woman shares that she sought help from social services but ended up losing all contact rights with her children. Court documents indicate her children were taken due to her inability to meet their needs, which affected their social development.

Unlike previous campaigns focused on Muslim children, this documentary addresses children of various backgrounds. The Swedish Institute has analyzed the documentary’s impact and noted its potential to shape negative perceptions of Sweden internationally. Should the documentary gain wider dissemination, it could adversely affect Sweden’s global influence and possibly pose security risks, as demonstrated by prior events surrounding disinformation campaigns and protests.

Al Jazeera has been approached for comments on the documentary.
