Arne Bye, a former chief municipal doctor, faces serious charges in a high-profile case involving multiple instances of sexual assault. He is accused of raping 87 patients during gynecological examinations and misusing his medical position to engage in sexual acts with 94 women. Bye has admitted guilt for three counts of rape and 35 instances of professional misconduct.

In court, Bye expressed that his actions were not driven by sexual motivations, stating, “I have not derived any pleasure from this.” He acknowledged that he used a numbing gel during examinations, which he later deemed inappropriate.

The trial, scheduled to run from November 5 to February 18, centers around allegations of misconduct occurring between 2004 and 2022. Bye admitted that he often felt compelled to extend examinations out of fear that patients might not be satisfied, a behavior he now regrets.

The charges classify rape as any sexual engagement with someone unable to resist, a violation Bye allegedly committed by inserting fingers and/or objects during examinations. Many of these procedures were filmed without the patients’ knowledge or consent, resulting in the discovery of over 47,000 video recordings at Bye’s residence.

Bye stated that the compulsion to document his procedures became overwhelming, asserting it was a way to ensure he was performing tasks correctly. He has criticized the media portrayal of the case, insisting that it felt like a “massive presumption of guilt” against him and hindered the victims’ healing processes.

Overall, this case has profound implications for medical ethics and patient protection, reflecting on the responsibilities of professionals in healthcare settings.
