Anders Winnerskjold appointed new mayor of Aarhus, succeeding Jacob Bundsgaard

On Wednesday, 32-year-old Anders Winnerskjold will be appointed as the new mayor of Aarhus, succeeding Jacob Bundsgaard, who is stepping down after 13 years. This marks the latest in a series of resignations by Social Democratic mayors, which has left voters without their preferred candidates.

Jesper Claus Larsen, Director at the analytical firm OTOO, points out that the incoming mayoral candidates face the dual challenge of establishing themselves while also revitalizing their party. Since the 2021 election, there have been numerous leadership changes among Social Democratic mayors in cities like Aalborg, Frederikshavn, and Copenhagen, leading to concerns about voter loyalty.

A total of eight Social Democratic mayors, who collectively received over 71,000 personal votes last time, will not appear on the ballot in the next election, affecting significant voter bases. Larsen, a former head of analysis for the Social Democrats, warns that the party may struggle to translate these votes to new candidates.

The municipal elections saw 75.5% of voters casting personal votes, compared to just 46.2% in the latest parliamentary election. Larsen believes this emphasizes the challenge of appealing to voters who typically favor strong, recognizable local leaders.

The Social Democrats have faced setbacks in major cities, where they experienced a drop of about ten percentage points in the last municipal vote. Recent polls indicate further decline in national support, with the party projected to receive only 19.9% of the vote, down from 28.5% in 2021.

With Anders Winnerskjold now at the helm in Aarhus, he will need to quickly establish his footing, having garnered only 4,861 personal votes compared to Bundsgaard’s 19,279. The formal transfer of the mayoral chain will occur during a city council meeting Wednesday afternoon.
