Plans for Ten Wind Energy Projects to be Presented Soon

In the coming weeks, the project management team of the Framework Plan will present a proposal for ten wind energy projects. According to the chair of the project management team, impending elections will not affect the professional analysis work being conducted.

The energy authority has identified around 30 wind energy projects for the Framework Plan team, and currently, they are focusing on ten of these. The chair emphasizes that they have been engaged in assessments and analyses to categorize the projects into waiting, utilization, and protection groups.

The projects are proposed for various locations, including Mosfellsheiði, Grjóthálsi near Bifröst, Laxárdalsheiði in Dölum, and Melrakkaslétta, with formal proposals expected to be submitted in November.

A dual review process will take several months, during which four specialized groups have been examining different aspects of the wind projects. They assess the impact on nature and cultural heritage, the interests of other landowners, social impacts, and economic consequences. After these evaluations, an open consultation will occur in two stages.

Jón Geir, the chair, mentions that the proposal and its analyses are of a technical nature, and political decision-making will follow. Despite the upcoming elections, this work remains uninfluenced by political agendas.

The proposal process is anticipated to take at least four months, considering the statutory review period. Once completed, the revised proposal will go to the minister, who may modify it before it is presented to Parliament for final classification as either a waiting, utilization, or protection project.

The Framework Plan has previously approved two wind energy projects, and the chair notes that it specifically addresses various energy options, highlighting the unique three-dimensional impacts of wind energy facilities compared to other forms of energy.
