Allocation committee distributes 550 million Icelandic kronor to 27 media outlets in Iceland
The allocation committee has distributed a total of 550 million Icelandic kronor in operational support to 27 privately-owned media outlets this year. The largest recipients are Árvakur, which publishes Morgunblaðið and mbl.is, along with Sýn, the owner of Stöð 2, Vísis, and Bylgjunnar, each receiving approximately 124 million kronor.
Supporting grants for privately-owned media were established through legislation in 2021, and funding has been allocated annually since then. Along with Árvakur and Sýn, other media organizations receiving funding include Birtíngur, Bændasamtök Íslands, Eigin herra, and several others, with various amounts based on their operational needs.
In total, three additional applications for support were rejected, highlighting the competitive nature of the funding process. The overall financial backing aims to bolster the operational environment of the media sector in Iceland, ensuring a diverse and resilient landscape for journalism in the country.
This financial support reflects ongoing government efforts to sustain media independence and promote a healthy media ecosystem, which is crucial for public discourse and democracy.
