Jari Mäki travels to Florida to support Trump during presidential elections
Jari Mäki from Ilmajoki has decided to time his 63rd trip to America to coincide with the presidential elections. Accompanied by his partner Anne Niemelä, the dedicated Trump supporter is soaking up the election atmosphere in Palm Beach, Florida, just a few miles from Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
Mäki’s fascination with American culture began decades ago, and for over 30 years, he has operated a store in the small village of Koskenkorva, selling an array of American merchandise ranging from boots to car parts and Trump memorabilia. He has traveled extensively in the Midwest and engaged with locals on multiple occasions.
According to Mäki, supporters of Trump express skepticism towards Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’s background as a lawyer. While her identity as a woman of color is not a barrier, Mäki indicates that supporters trust Trump’s promises regarding tax reductions, while viewing Harris as lacking significant accomplishments in business.
Mäki acknowledges that he is troubled by some of Trump’s statements and historical judgments but has consistently supported the Republican Party. He describes his backing of Trump as principled, emphasizing the importance of staying true to one’s beliefs.
Interestingly, he notes a lack of roadside advertisements for either candidate during his three-week trip, raising questions about the presence of campaign visibility.
Despite the much-discussed societal divide, Mäki has not observed significant signs of conflict during his travels, stating there have been no protests and supporters do not seem to hide their affiliations. As for Election Day, Mäki plans a celebratory drive past Trump’s estate, and should Trump emerge victorious, he intends to treat the locals to coffee in Koskenkorva, making it clear, “Pullakahvit, se on selvä!” (Bun and coffee, that’s for sure!)
