Tragic accident leaves seven-year-old Anna hospitalized for 45 days in Denmark
A tragic accident occurred in an instant. Seven-year-old Anna suffered severe burns, prompting an urgent transfer from her home in West Jutland to Rigshospitalet for treatment. Her mother, Malene Jespersen, shared that Anna was hospitalized for 45 days due to extensive injuries.
Jespersen expressed gratitude for their family’s recovery, attributing much of this to their stay at Ronald McDonald House near Rigshospitalet. This space allowed the family to be together during a crisis, enabling her and her husband to support Anna while caring for their two younger daughters, aged one and five.
The Ronald McDonald House at Rigshospitalet has been providing support to families with sick children for 22 years. A new facility is set to open next spring at Nyt OUH in Odense, despite the hospital’s construction delays. The plan for the house was established in 2012 when the Southern Denmark Region and the Ronald McDonald Foundation agreed upon the project. Situated on a 4,000-square-meter plot, the new house will span 1,600 square meters, offering 15 furnished rooms and shared spaces, ready by March 2025.
The house caters to families with seriously ill children aged 0 to 18 and is designed to provide a home-like environment, allowing families to stay together while their child is hospitalized. Jespersen reflected on how this support made a significant difference during their ordeal, ensuring that no family member felt isolated.
The new Ronald McDonald House in Odense will open on March 19 and accommodate 15 families, providing them a shared space while their child receives medical care. The opening day for Nyt OUH remains uncertain, as ongoing negotiations seek to establish a new timeline for Denmark’s largest newly built super-hospital. Anna was discharged in September.
