A man has been convicted for stating that his daughter would have been killed if they lived in an Arab country. The judge commented that his words exemplify the worst that can occur when individuals allow culture, religion, and traditions to dictate their words and actions, particularly in justifying violence against their loved ones.

The Reykjanes District Court sentenced a couple, their daughter, and son-in-law to six months of probationary imprisonment for serious offenses against another daughter and their grandchildren. The family expressed discontent over the woman’s desire to separate from her children’s father and her relationship with another man. They were particularly outraged by photographs showing their daughter in a short-sleeved shirt and without a headscarf alongside her partner. Four other family members were acquitted.

The father was found guilty for his statements during a police interrogation, in which he remarked that if they lived in an Arab country, the men in the family would have already killed his daughter. He further indicated that it would be acceptable if his son had killed her.

The judge described the father’s comments as grave, warning that they threaten the life, health, and welfare of his daughter. This case has drawn attention to the dangers of allowing cultural beliefs to justify harmful actions, particularly in domestic settings.
