An employee tragically died in an accident at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport early Saturday morning. The incident, first reported by Helsingin Sanomat, occurred during the relocation of a Finnair aircraft. The deceased was an employee of Aviator Finland, which provides passenger and ground services, as confirmed by the company’s CEO, Kimmo Holopainen.

Holopainen indicated that several workers were involved in moving the aircraft that had just arrived from Tokyo when the accident occurred. “The well-being of our staff is currently our top priority. We are holding staff meetings,” he stated on Saturday morning.

According to Duty Commissioner Olavi Merihaara from the East Uusimaa Police Department, the police received an emergency call at 5:14 AM regarding a rescue operation at the airport, where an individual was trapped. Emergency services and police personnel were present at the scene. “This is a very unusual incident. Typically, the environment is very safe, with strict safety instructions and regulations in place,” Merihaara noted.

The accident took place on the airport’s apron, which requires specific training and authorization for access, he added. The police have initiated an investigation into the cause of death. As the investigation is in its early stages, further information will not be released at this time.

This news update was published at 10:22 AM and has been supplemented with new details regarding the incident and the background of the employee, according to STT.
