Man sentenced to six years for attempted murder after knife attack in Reykjavik

A man has been sentenced to six years in prison for attempted murder following a knife attack in Reykjavik. The incident took place on Hofsvallagata during the night in January when the assailant, who was in an altered state, was walking down the middle of the street. A couple passing by commented on his behavior, expressing concerns about the safety of the area. This provoked the attacker, who pulled out a knife and stabbed a man in the side. The victim suffered severe injuries and was briefly in life-threatening condition.

The Reykjavik District Court delivered its verdict last month, but it was only made public yesterday. In addition to the prison sentence, the assailant has been ordered to pay the victim over two million Icelandic krónur in compensation for emotional distress.
