A troubling incident occurred in Turku, Finland, as a store owner, Mikko Huhtanen, recounted a frightening confrontation with a knife-wielding customer after a beer theft escalated in 2018. Huhtanen, who operates the K-Market on Kanslerintie, and his wife narrowly avoided being harmed with help from a nearby customer who called the police, preventing a potentially dangerous situation.

Though physical assaults with knives are rare in his store, Huhtanen highlights that threats and shoplifting are increasingly common. In the past week alone, he has filed four theft reports and experiences monthly breaches of physical security. Previously, he could identify potential troublemakers before they entered the store, but that is no longer the case. Drunk individuals and mixed-drug users have traditionally been the main offenders, but now even well-dressed customers have been known to issue threats.

According to Terhi Kuljukka-Rabbi, a security expert from the Retail Association, threatening behavior and violence have surged more significantly than shoplifting. Reports indicate that such violent behaviors have increased over 200% since 2020, as reflected in customer misconduct records. A survey of union members revealed that 70% encountered harassment or inappropriate behavior at work in 2023, with hundreds of assaults reported to the police annually.

In response to rising violence, Turku’s vocational institute for business is training future professionals on safety precautions, ensuring students are prepared for potential threats in retail environments. A proposed solution to the issue includes establishing a corporate restraining order, which would ban individuals from entering business premises, akin to personal restraining orders, currently under legislative consideration in Finland.
