The funding figures for Norwegian municipalities will be announced by Minister of Local Government Erling Sande and Labour Party Deputy Leader Tonje Brenna at a press conference scheduled for 11:45 a.m. on Friday. However, a social media mishap revealed the amount ahead of time: the government is set to allocate 5 billion kroner to the municipalities.

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has confirmed that this amount is accurate. Minister Sande expressed the importance of this funding to address the challenges faced by municipalities, highlighting its role in ensuring safe kindergartens, quality schools for young people, and effective elderly care.

While 5 billion kroner is a substantial sum, it falls significantly short of the estimated annual deficit faced by Norwegian municipalities, which is approximated by KS to be around 15 billion kroner.

The revelation of the funding amount came when Brenna accidentally posted a photo on social media that confirmed the figure. This post has since been deleted and replaced with another image where the content is not visible.

In her notes, Brenna mentioned that the proposed amount would not resolve all challenges, stating that many municipalities would still face difficult local prioritizations despite the additional funds. She expressed confidence in local elected officials to manage these issues effectively.

Dag Inge Ulstein, leader of the Christian Democratic Party (KrF), criticized the government’s proposal as insufficient, asserting that at least 10 billion kroner is necessary to meet municipal needs. He warned that municipalities are planning cuts to elderly care, schools, and kindergartens, underscoring the urgency for a revised funding strategy.
