Three political parties in Iceland yet to submit financial statements to National Audit Office

The deadline for political parties in Iceland to submit their annual financial statements to the National Audit Office expired at midnight. Out of eight parties represented in parliament, three have yet to turn in their reports, according to information from the office.

Submitting these financial statements is a legal requirement, ensuring transparency regarding how political parties are funded. Recently, the Pirate Party, the Progress Party, the People’s Party, and the Centre Party submitted their reports, with the Left-Green Movement doing so last week. The Social Democratic Alliance, the Independence Party, and the Reform Party have not yet submitted their financial statements. However, the Socialist Party, which is not represented in parliament, submitted its report back in June.

Currently, fifteen political organizations have completed their submissions, either operating at the national or municipal level. Among the organizations that have filed recently are the Voice of Young People in Grindavík, the K-list of Dalvíkurbyggð, and the I-list in Ísafjörður.

The National Audit Office had previously reminded political parties of the deadline for submitting their reports, emphasizing that compliance with this obligation is necessary to qualify for state or municipal funding. This reminder came after the office noted that less than one-third of the parties required to submit last year’s annual reports had done so, almost a year after the deadline.

A statement from the National Audit Office indicated that it’s concerning that several of the parties that failed to meet the deadline have received municipal funding, as adherence to this requirement is crucial for accessing governmental financial resources.
