Helsinki police conclude investigation into former ambassador Jari Vilén for fraud and breach of duty
The Helsinki police have completed their preliminary investigation into expense reimbursements paid to former ambassador Jari Vilén. Authorities suspect Vilén of fraud and breach of official duty, leading the case into the prosecution phase. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs reported the incident to the police in June 2024, asserting that the conditions for these reimbursements were not fully met. Among the questioned expenses are relocation compensation for the family, which includes allowances for spouses and children.
In the summer, the Ministry began reclaiming nearly €37,000 from Vilén for reimbursements made between September 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024. The amounts being recovered include portions for the relocation allowances for the spouse and child, as well as travel allowances for their move and local allowances for the spouse and child.
Further updates on the situation are expected.
