Eleven political parties submit candidacies for Iceland’s upcoming parliamentary elections
The deadline for submitting candidacies for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iceland expired today at noon. A total of eleven political parties submitted their applications to the National Election Committee, with ten aiming for representation across all electoral districts. The parties include the Progressive Party, Reform Party, Independence Party, People’s Party, Socialist Party of Iceland, Democratic Party, Centre Party, Pirates, Social Democratic Alliance, and the Left-Green Movement. Additionally, the Responsible Future party submitted a candidacy specifically for the northern Reykjavik constituency.
Now that the candidacy period has closed, the National Election Committee will review the submitted documents. If any corrections or additional information is needed, the parties will have 24 hours to make adjustments. By 4 PM on Sunday, the list of candidates will be finalized, leading to a 20-hour period for appeals against the candidacies.
The Pirates plan to focus their campaign on housing issues, environmental concerns, and human rights, according to their spokesperson. Meanwhile, the Socialist Party is also set to launch its campaign, promoting its priorities, which include housing and tax reforms.
In total, the election contest will feature candidates striving to gain voter support ahead of the elections scheduled for November 30th. Following the conclusion of the candidacy submissions, the campaign will officially commence, with a series of debates and gatherings planned to allow candidates to present their platforms.
