The Pirate Party enters the 2024 elections with optimism, asserting that it is time for a new, responsible government to take charge. The party plans to focus on housing issues, environmental and climate matters, and human rights during the campaign.

Þórhildur Sunna Ævarsdóttir, the party’s candidate for the Southwest constituency, emphasizes that the party has committed to a democratic primary process, even if candidates would have appreciated more preparation time. She expresses enthusiasm about the upcoming televised debates and highlights the campaign’s engaging agenda.

The housing market is identified as one of the most significant economic challenges currently facing society, necessitating a government that takes responsibility. This includes uniting municipalities, labor unions, pension funds, and developers to create solutions. Þórhildur Sunna advocates for radical measures, such as reducing short-term rentals and accelerating the construction of residential units, alongside devising a long-term plan.

Additionally, she argues that environmental and climate issues have been sidelined in recent election cycles. The Pirate Party aims to ensure that future governments provide ambitious solutions that protect biodiversity. This involves closing open net fish farms, banning whaling, and guaranteeing energy security for households.

Mental health services, underfunded for over a decade, also require significant strengthening, as does the approach to drug-related issues, which should focus on harm reduction.

The Pirates are preparing for the upcoming elections, showcasing a commitment to addressing pressing social matters with a forward-thinking approach.
