Lapland region in Finland identified for 1,752 potential wind turbines and significant solar energy sites

A recent report by Lapin liitto indicates that the Lapland region in Finland has the potential to accommodate 1,752 wind turbines across 48 identified sites. These areas range in size from 11 to 342 square kilometers. Out of the proposed turbines, 108 would be located offshore. Collectively, land-based wind energy sites could occupy approximately 1,680 square kilometers, which is about two percent of Lapland’s total land area. This could lead to a future electricity production capacity of around 33 to 53 terawatt-hours.

Kemijärvi is identified as the location for the highest number of turbines, with over 250 possible installations. Close to 250 could also be established in Sodankylä, while Inari and Ranua could each host just over 200 turbines. Only Muonio and Tervola lack potential wind energy sites.

The economic implications of wind energy are significant, particularly concerning property taxes and job creation during construction. Each wind turbine is expected to generate approximately €400,000 in property tax over its lifespan, translating to an estimated €100 million in Kemijärvi, €95 million in Sodankylä, and over €80 million in Inari and Ranua.

Potential solar energy sites are primarily located in southwestern and central Lapland, with two potential sites identified for each municipality. This solar initiative is expected to also positively impact local economies. A solar power installation could generate about €3,350 in property tax per hectare annually, and a 100-megawatt solar facility could create around 20 person-years of employment.

The assessment of wind and solar energy aims to identify significant production areas and support municipal planning while addressing differing opinions from local stakeholders, including the Sámi Parliament regarding indigenous land use concerns.
