The investigation into the electric scooter accident that occurred in Myyrmäki, Vantaa, in June has been forwarded to the prosecutor for review on charges including endangering traffic safety, causing death, and two counts of causing bodily harm. Arto Sartanen, the lead investigator, stated that the prosecutor will only consider charges against the adult female driver of the car, as the child riding the scooter is under 15 years old.
Police suspect that the child operating the scooter may also be charged with causing death, bodily harm, and jeopardizing traffic safety. The incident took place around 8 p.m. at a crosswalk on Raappavuorentie, when the driver collided with three children on electric scooters, all of whom were 12 years old at the time of the event. One child later succumbed to injuries in the hospital, while the other two sustained minor injuries.
Sartanen detailed that one child was in a crouched position on the scooter, one was holding the handlebars, and another was riding along in another manner. The collision resulted in minor damage to the car. According to the driver, the situation escalated very quickly, leaving her unable to see the scooter before the impact. Witness accounts confirm the scooter’s high speed at the time of the incident, Sartanen noted. Initially, police had indicated they suspected the car driver of gross endangerment of traffic safety, causing death, and two counts of causing bodily harm. The case is expected to proceed to indictment review in the coming days.
