Fisheries Association calls for end to pharmacy’s exclusive rights on veterinary medicines in Faroe Islands
The Fisheries Association argues that the government-owned pharmacy should not have exclusive rights to the veterinary medicines used by the aquaculture industry.
The association claims that businesses in the aquaculture sector have received specific offers for veterinary products that are cheaper than those provided by the pharmacy.
Consequently, the Fisheries Association urges the Minister of Health to revoke the pharmacy’s exclusive right to import veterinary medicines used in Faroese aquaculture, enabling fish farming companies to choose from various suppliers.
Norwegian and Scottish fish farmers can purchase from multiple vendors, enhancing competition for better prices and services. The association believes that the same principle should apply to the Faroese aquaculture industry.
Furthermore, the government plans to discontinue financial support for veterinary medicines in the upcoming budget for 2025. As part of austerity measures, this will include a ten percent reduction in subsidies currently provided to the aquaculture sector.
The government does not assess that the industry requires this financial support moving forward.
