Magnús Már Guðmundsson takes over as Ás director

Magnús Már Guðmundsson has been appointed executive director of Ás, a public benefit association that provides services for disabled people, mbl.is reports. He succeeds Þóra Þórarinsdóttir, who had held the position since 2001.

Ás operates specialised workplaces for disabled people and ten residential centres in the capital area. The association was founded in March 1958 by relatives of disabled people to protect their interests and provide services.

The position was advertised at the beginning of the year, and Guðmundsson was selected from among the applicants. He most recently served as executive director of BSRB for about seven years. His previous roles have included city councillor, deputy city councillor, secondary school teacher and journalist. He has also worked with disabled children and young people.

In a statement, Ás staff thanked Þórarinsdóttir for her contribution, saying she had played a major role in the association’s development and expansion during her 25 years with the organisation.
