Investigation concludes in major sexual crime case involving minors in Finland
A comprehensive investigation into a major sexual crime case involving minors in Finland has reached a significant development. The preliminary investigation has been completed, and the case is now moving to the prosecutorial phase.
This extensive criminal matter involves 194 minors from various parts of Finland. A man in his thirties from the Pirkanmaa region has been arrested in connection with the allegations. The investigation is looking into serious charges including aggravated sexual assault of a child, child sexual exploitation, and child grooming for sexual purposes. According to police, the victims were aged between 6 to 15 years, with the majority being girls.
The offenses reportedly occurred on the now-defunct video chat service Omegle between 2022 and 2023. The suspect allegedly encouraged children to engage in sexual acts during video calls. Petri Lamppu, Chief Inspector of the Southwest Finland police, noted that 194 offenses were transferred for prosecution, with the identities of 31 victims being established during the investigation.
In June, police requested identification assistance from the families of the victims to ascertain their identities. The preliminary inquiries concluded for nine of the allegations, as it could not be established that the unidentified victims were under 16 years of age. Despite receiving numerous contacts since June, police have been unable to identify new victims linked to this case. However, several new instances of sexual crimes against children on the same platforms have emerged. The investigation is particularly challenging due to the closure of the site, its international nature, and the anonymity of the users involved.
