Fazer is transitioning its candy factory in Lappeenranta to operate its steam production using electricity. This electrification will reduce emissions from the factory by 90% and lower the overall carbon footprint of the Fazer Group by 10%. The Lappeenranta facility produces various confectioneries and xylitol products, which rely on steam for their manufacturing process. Currently, steam is generated using natural gas in heated boilers, but in the future, electricity will serve as the energy source.
Lappeenranta’s mayor, Tuomo Sallinen, regards Fazer’s investment as crucial for the city. He emphasized the extensive collaboration required between Fazer and the city’s stakeholders to bring this project to fruition. “This investment is vital not only for the company but also for ensuring the development of the industrial area and the operational conditions of the candy factory in Lappeenranta for many years to come,” Sallinen stated.
Work on the electrification is set to begin in early 2025, with a new electric boiler expected to be operational by 2026. The new boiler will be integrated into the existing boiler hall, and the changes are not anticipated to be visible from outside the factory, according to Fazers’ statement.
The project also aims to enhance the factory’s energy efficiency by capturing heat from the cooling system. The recovered heat will be utilized in the factory’s processes and for building heating.
A few years back, the future of Fazer’s Lappeenranta plant was uncertain as the company contemplated relocating candy production to a new facility in Lahti. However, in March of last year, they confirmed that production would continue in Lappeenranta. In spring 2024, Fazer will open a factory outlet near the Hiekkalinno area.
