During a recent demonstration against the war in Gaza, flags associated with the terrorist organizations Hamas and Hezbollah were reportedly seen, prompting comments from Migration Minister Johan Forssell. Forssell expressed his desire for laws to be modified so that individuals who express support for terrorist groups could be deported from Sweden.

In a debate on the current affairs program “Aktuellt,” Forssell underscored the importance of not allowing those who glorify terrorism to remain in the country. He stated, “We have significant freedom of speech here in Sweden, but when it comes to celebrating terror groups, we can’t turn a blind eye. These individuals should not be in Sweden.”

Annika Hirvonen, a spokesperson for the Green Party, concurred that praising terrorist organizations is inappropriate but emphasized the need for more equitable laws. She argued that freedom of expression should apply equally to all individuals in Sweden, including citizens, refugees, and residents with permits. “What is completely unacceptable should be prohibited equally for everyone,” she said.

Forssell elaborated that the proposed legislation targets individuals with temporary residency permits, as he believes that citizenship should hold value. He remarked, “This group challenges the free and open society that we seek to protect. It becomes unreasonable for someone to celebrate terrorism and then be rewarded with Swedish citizenship.”

Hirvonen responded by advocating for equal legal treatment for all, whether they are Swedish citizens, refugees, or tourists, asserting that any criminal act should be punished, regardless of nationality.
