Dogs in Finland and Estonia suffer neurological seizures linked to Hau Hau rolls
This autumn, animal clinics in Finland have received dogs suffering from severe neurological seizures. Reports indicate similar cases have also emerged in Estonia. Many dog owners in Finland have publicly shared that their pets fell ill after consuming products like Hau Hau light rolls or Hau Hau duck meat rolls. The Finnish Food Authority investigated Hau Hau light rolls but found no evidence in their analyses that could explain the dogs’ symptoms.
In early September, Estonia’s Agricultural and Food Board announced a recall of Hau Hau light rolls from local stores as a precautionary measure. Sales of the product have been suspended in Estonia until the issue is clarified. The agency recommended in September that these chew rolls should not be given to dogs until further information is available. According to their website, Estonia has also contacted the European Commission and other EU member states, stating that Hau Hau Champion chew rolls manufactured in China could potentially cause neurological symptoms in dogs. The Estonian board informed Finnish media that they had received reports of dogs potentially falling ill from these chew rolls, emphasizing that the situation is still under investigation.
In Finland, the situation had calmed for a time; however, over the recent weekend, reports suggested that more dogs with related illnesses were being brought to animal clinics. Several veterinary clinics have also shared advisories on social media urging pet owners to avoid chew products containing foreign meat. The importer, Prima Pet Premium, withdrew the Hau Hau light rolls from sale this autumn due to suspicions of a product defect. The company has also voluntarily recalled eight other chew products this fall and announced that they have terminated their partnership with the Chinese manufacturer.
