Rapid growth of Facebook group on Northern Lights attracts attention in Denmark

The Facebook group “Nordlysvarsel i Danmark” currently has over 283,000 members, making it just 7,000 shy of the Danish royal family. This rapid growth is fueled by spectacular Northern Lights displays, with the group expanding by 5,000 to 8,000 members in a single night during such phenomena. Jannik Holgersen, the founder of the group, described the explosion in membership as remarkable, noting that they gained 30,000 members during a week of heightened Northern Lights activity in October.

As interest in the Northern Lights increases, popular viewing spots have become crowded. Enthusiast Keld Skytte Petersen shared his experience of encountering unexpected visitors in once-quiet locations. Despite the increased foot traffic, he welcomes sharing his favorite spots, emphasizing the joy of camaraderie over coffee and snacks under the stars.

Social media plays a key role in this growing interest. The awareness generated online prompts more people to search for the Northern Lights, while those who miss a good show often find their feeds filled with images the next day. Holgersen points out that many individuals are surprised to realize they’ve never seen the Northern Lights despite living in Denmark for years. He believes that being informed is crucial for having these experiences.

Currently, conditions for viewing the Northern Lights are promising due to the sun’s 11-year activity cycle nearing its peak, which enhances visibility during clear, dark nights. Astrophysicist Michael Linden-Vørnle observes a growing fascination with outer space and celestial events, declaring it vital for people to connect with the cosmos and gain awareness beyond their daily lives. While he cannot guarantee sightings, he indicates that upcoming solar activities may create more opportunities for experiencing this natural wonder.
