A pack of six wolves was spotted running across a field near the borders of Alastaro, Punkalaidun, and Huittinen, close to Highway 2. The event was captured on a local individual’s mobile phone camera last Saturday around 10 a.m. Yle requested Jörgen Hermansson, the acting game manager at the Finnish Wildlife Agency, to analyze the footage.
The presence of wolves in this region is not unusual; there are approximately fifteen wolf packs’ territories in the Varsinais-Suomi and Satakunta areas. However, Hermansson noted that the timing of the video is rare, as wolves typically move during the night. “While a pack of six wolves isn’t extraordinary—there could be ten if it’s a large litter—it’s unusual for them to be active in the middle of the day,” he explained.
Hermansson highlighted the need for regulated hunting of wolves in southwest Finland but clarified that the daytime activity shown in the video is not evidence of that necessity. “It corroborates existing knowledge that there is a wolf territory with a pack of six in the area,” he said, adding that the footage shows two adult wolves and four large pups.
He suspects that some disturbance may have caused the pack to move during daylight hours, possibly due to a hunter, mushroom picker, or forestry machine. Wolves are adapting to human-populated rural areas and regularly detect people, cars, and tractors. However, according to Hermansson, there is no cause for concern among local residents.
