WMO report reveals alarming rise in CO2 levels as global warming accelerates

The sky appears as it always has, yet it conceals a grim story. The primary cause of global warming stems from an increasing concentration of CO2 and greenhouse gases. As 2023 unfolds, it adds another chapter to a narrative all too familiar. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) concludes in its annual report that atmospheric greenhouse gas levels have again surpassed last year’s record.
This continuing trend should serve as a wake-up call for decision-makers. According to the WMO, CO2 accumulates in the atmosphere “faster than at any previous point in human existence.” Over the past two decades, CO2 levels have risen by 10%. However, there is a glimmer of hope: the increase from 2022 to 2023 was less significant than in the previous three years.
The persistent rise in CO2 concentration is driven by two factors: a “stubbornly high” output from human and industrial activity, and, as of last year, extensive forest and wildfires. These blazes consume vast areas, choking the atmosphere with smoke that absorbs significant amounts of CO2. The WMO warns of a potential vicious cycle where ecosystems may become larger sources of greenhouse gas emissions due to climate change, exacerbating the problem.
WMO’s vice-secretary, Ko Barrett, stresses that rising temperatures disrupt natural processes vital to the carbon cycle. Warmer seas, for instance, absorb less CO2, potentially causing higher levels of CO2 to remain in the atmosphere and accelerating global warming.
WMO indicates that to find similar CO2 levels recorded in 2023, one must look back three to five million years—when temperatures were 2-3 degrees warmer, and sea levels were 10-20 meters higher. The implications are profound, as every fraction of a degree plays a crucial role in the well-being of our planet and its inhabitants.
