Viðreisn finalizes candidacy lists ahead of 2024 parliamentary elections in Iceland
In preparation for the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections in Iceland, the political party Viðreisn has finalized its candidacy lists across all electoral districts. Party chair Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir announced that although there were plans for primaries, the short notice for elections necessitated a list assembly instead. She highlighted that this marks an unprecedented level of interest, with more applicants than ever in the party’s history.
Gunnarsdóttir expressed joy in having to manage such an overwhelming response, stating that interest was strong in both the capital area and rural regions. She was particularly struck by the number of applicants seeking positions on the list, regardless of whether they were for competitive parliamentary seats or lower positions.
There is a palpable momentum surrounding the party, according to Gunnarsdóttir, noting that the so-called “tailwind” parties sometimes experience is currently very real for Viðreisn. The nomination committees faced a considerable task in reviewing all candidates.
Emphasizing the need for a diverse representation on their list, the party aims to align leadership with societal demands for necessary changes. Gunnarsdóttir outlined key policy objectives, including reducing interest rates to combat inflation and addressing both the mental and physical well-being of the population, particularly children.
As the election period draws nearer, Viðreisn is poised to present candidates who reflect the community’s varied perspectives and ambitions, with a focus on actionable solutions to pressing issues.
