The Pirkanmaa District Court has sentenced a woman born in 1976 to five months of conditional imprisonment for severe debtor dishonesty. In 2021, the woman purchased decommissioned swimming pool facilities and two commercial properties from the city of Sastamala for just a hundred euros. Local newspapers reported her intentions regarding the acquisitions.

However, the court indicated that the woman had been insolvent and in enforcement proceedings for several years by the time she made the purchase. This case came to light through an investigation by Yle’s MOT program, which uncovered a similar pattern of cheap property sales beyond Sastamala that existed beyond the reach of debt collection.

The woman failed to pay her community fees, leading to significant financial difficulties for other shareholders in the real estate company, with outstanding payments totaling nearly €55,000 by the end of 2021. In court, the woman admitted to the charges and reached a settlement with the real estate company, which influenced the length of her sentence.

The ruling is not yet final, meaning that it can be appealed to the Court of Appeal.
