Former Commander Risto Jääskeläinen Under Investigation for Service Crime in Finland
The investigation into former commander of the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard, Risto Jääskeläinen, has progressed with the Central Criminal Police suspecting him of a service crime spanning from May 2023 to July 2024. According to Investigator Sami Liimatainen, the authorities are currently examining events within this timeframe under the definition of a service crime.
Earlier reports indicated that Jääskeläinen was facing suspicions of criminal activity and was no longer serving in his position. The police began their investigation at the end of July and subsequently confirmed that they were looking into potential service crimes involving senior officials in the Border Guard.
Liimatainen clarified that while the police cannot specify the identity of the suspect, the investigation is directed at a member of the Coast Guard’s senior staff. The head of the legal department at the Border Guard, Sanna Palo, informed that Jääskeläinen would not continue in his role due to the ongoing investigation.
Service crimes can occur when a military member fails to fulfill their duties, operates under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or seeks unwarranted relief from service. Penalties can include imprisonment for up to one year.
Liimatainen noted that he cannot comment on the specifics of the allegations at this time, nor has there been any public disclosure regarding the suspect’s statements in interrogations.
A request for comment from Jääskeläinen was forwarded, but he declined to participate or make any remarks. The lead investigator anticipates that the preliminary investigation may be concluded within a few months, with further interrogations still forthcoming. Given Jääskeläinen’s public position, his name is being released at this stage of the investigation.
