Court appeals, crime, Tampere

A 24-year-old man convicted of stabbing four people near the Ratina shopping centre in Tampere has appealed his sentence, Yle reported.

Ville-Valtteri Johannes Väänänen was sentenced by the Pirkanmaa District Court to nine and a half years in prison for three attempted murders and one aggravated assault.

He stabbed four randomly selected people in July 2025.

The court found Väänänen criminally responsible at the time of the attacks. Based on a danger assessment, it also considered him extremely dangerous to another person’s life, health or freedom. His previous criminal record supported that assessment.

The court imposed a combination sentence intended for extremely dangerous prisoners. People serving such a sentence cannot be released on parole or granted supervised probationary release.

Väänänen was also charged with making an illegal threat, but that charge was dismissed.
