Iceland launches passport and ID card collection service at Hagkaup store in Skeifan
Starting today, individuals in Iceland can collect their official identification documents from the Hagkaup store in Skeifan as part of a new initiative by the National Registry of Iceland. This trial project, which will last six months, aims to enhance service delivery to Icelanders.
Gunnar Lárus Hjálmarsson from the National Registry and Sigurður Reynaldsson, managing director of Hagkaup, formalized the agreement this morning. Sigurður was notably the first to receive a passport at this location.
Customers will now have the option to obtain both passports and ID cards from the Skeifan store. The initiative is designed to provide greater accessibility in the capital region, with ample free parking available and improved access for individuals with disabilities. Additionally, documents can be picked up 24/7.
Julia Thorvaldsdottir, CEO of the National Registry, expressed that this step represents an improvement in public service. They had long considered feasible ways to enhance their offerings and concluded that partnering with Hagkaup aligned with the Registry’s mission. The management at Hagkaup responded positively and quickly implemented the plan.
Staff at Hagkaup have undergone specialized training to handle the identification documents, and they will adhere to the same security standards set by the National Registry. Applicants have seven days to collect their documents from the store once they are ready; otherwise, they will need to pick them up directly from the National Registry.
Sigurður Reynaldsson stated that Hagkaup continually seeks innovative ways to meet customer needs and is proud to partner with the National Registry in this forward-thinking project.
