In a poignant announcement, Peter Gitmark, the chairman of the Vipers handball club, confirmed during a press conference that the team had played its last home game. A significant majority of the board concluded that the club could not continue operations due to insufficient funds to last until next summer. Players were informed of the decision, with many expressing shock and disbelief upon hearing the news.

Magnus Aglen, the club’s managing director, stated that it was the right decision to declare a need for 25 million kroner (approximately $2.5 million) earlier in the week to avoid bankruptcy. Aglen supported the board’s conclusion to file for bankruptcy on Monday, emphasizing the need to process the gravity of the situation.

Handball expert Håvard Tvedten described this as a severe blow to Norwegian club handball, predicting it would be the biggest scandal in European handball this year. He voiced sympathy for the players and coaches who relocated their lives to support the club’s project and lamented the disastrous financial decisions that led to this crisis.

Former Vipers coach Ole Gustav Gjekstad also expressed his sadness, calling the club’s decline tragic and criticizing the rapid shift from a market-based operation to a struggling entity in such a short time. He now manages the Danish team Odense and will become the head coach of Norway’s women’s national team in January.

Vipers, once crowned the best women’s handball team in Norway, has achieved numerous accolades including seven consecutive league titles and three consecutive Champions League victories. However, financial woes led to severe cutbacks, salary reductions, and ultimately the decision to cease operations, marking the end of an era for this celebrated club.
