Finnish Border Guard detains suspected illegal border crosser from Russia

Finland’s Border Guard has detained an adult person suspected of illegally crossing the border from Russia, Yle reported.

The North Karelia Border Guard District is investigating the suspected crossing in the Tuupovaara area of Joensuu. The person was detained on Friday afternoon near the border after allegedly crossing through the terrain.

Janne Laukkanen, the district’s officer in charge, said the person was detected using technical surveillance equipment before border guards made the arrest.

There is no new barrier fence in the area. The person has applied for asylum in Finland.

The Border Guard has launched a preliminary investigation into a suspected state border offence. North Karelia’s border commissioner has contacted the border commissioner for Russia’s Suojärvi area.
