Man arrested in Sweden on extradition request from Russia amid ongoing terrorist investigations
A man in his 40s was arrested in Sweden in June following a request for extradition from Russia, where he is suspected of committing terrorist offenses. However, the extradition could not be carried out because the man holds residency in another European country, which prevents his removal from the EU, as explained by prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist.
Due to concerns from the security police regarding his threat to national security, he was not released but placed in the Migration Agency’s special detention while awaiting deportation. During this period, a request for his arrest came from Belgium, where he is also suspected of terrorist activities.
The man has since been secretly extracted from Sweden in an operation led by Belgian special forces. This was confirmed by prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist, who noted that Swedish personnel were also present, although he did not disclose the agencies involved. Torben Setterlund, appointed as the man’s public defender, previously stated that the accused denies the charges, asserting that they are false.
