Fire at Køge Harbor disrupts S-train and regional train services in Denmark

A fire at Køge Harbor is disrupting the operation of S-trains and regional trains. There are currently no S-train services running between Køge and Ølby, and no replacement bus services have been arranged for that route. Additionally, regional trains between Næstved and Copenhagen Central Station will not stop between Herfølge and Ølby. Bus services are also affected, with several lines not stopping at Køge Station.

Efforts to extinguish the fire, which is located in a pile of scrap metal at the harbor, are underway. According to Thomas Elm Kampmann, the director of Køge Harbor, the situation is less severe than a previous incident. Three cranes are currently dismantling the scrap pile and spraying water on it.

Køge Harbor experienced another fire in April, this time involving a ship that posed a threat to local residents. The prevailing east winds have caused smoke to drift into downtown Køge, but Kampmann reports that the smoke column is now rising more vertically. Nevertheless, he advises residents to adhere to guidance from emergency services and police.

Authorities from Mid and West Zealand Police had previously warned citizens about the harmful nature of the smoke, urging those in downtown Køge to stay indoors. That warning has since been lifted, and residents are now allowed to move freely. The police have indicated that the only remaining risk pertains to smoke in the harbor area itself, where firefighters are still working to control the blaze. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Those feeling unwell due to smoke inhalation are advised to contact healthcare services.
