Bill would let municipalities use surveillance cameras in vulnerable areas

legislation, municipalities, surveillance cameras

A government bill would allow municipalities to use surveillance cameras in particularly vulnerable areas used for ordinary traffic, with the aim of improving safety, KVF reports.

Under the proposal, a municipal council could monitor an area in consultation with the police and on their recommendation. The police recommendation would remain valid for two years.

Recordings could be provided to the police under a court order. Others could process the footage if necessary in connection with a criminal case. The recordings would have to be deleted no later than 30 days after they were made.

A municipality installing cameras would be responsible for the data. The bill is open for consultation until November 26.
