Kouvola Magic Days relocates to Hanasaaren in Espoo next year
The 40-year-old Kouvola Magic Days event will be relocated to Hanasaaren in Espoo next year. The inaugural Magic Day was organized by Kouvola magician Markku Purho in 1982 and continued without interruption until last year. This year’s event was canceled due to Purho’s illness and subsequent passing.
Elmo Huovila, a magician from Kouvola who previously assisted with the event’s organization, has stepped in to manage Magic Days. He also serves as the president of the Finnish Magicians Association, alongside Kalle Nio from the Finnish Magic Circle.
Scheduled for October next year, the event will represent the Nordic Magic Congress, which was originally planned to take place during the Kouvola Magic Days. The city of Kouvola has provided varying levels of support to the Magic Days event over the years but did not allocate any funding for this year.
“We don’t have a specific stance on supporting Magic Days yet, but as a city, we are interested in all new and recurring events within the annual resource framework,” said Anne Käki, Kouvola’s community liaison officer. Between 2021 and 2024, the city supported Magic Days with funding ranging from €4,000 to €12,000.
There has been interest from other cities in Finland to host the Magic Days event. “Several cities have reached out, and discussions have included a desire to support the event,” Huovila noted. Next year, around 200 magicians are expected to participate, many bringing their families.
“Many in Kouvola might not realize the economic benefits the event could bring with visitors staying in hotels and dining in local restaurants,” Huovila added. Despite the move to Espoo, organizers hope to bring the event back to Kouvola in the future, provided the city can offer support, particularly in terms of venue arrangements.
