Rat-catching dog Asterix has shown a special ability to sniff out and dig up rats, KVF reports. His owner, Jan Thomsen Eldevig of the village of Streymnes, says Asterix has caught more than 40 rats so far this year, mostly during their regular walks rather than while actively searching for rats.
People have now heard about Asterix’s ability and are increasingly asking for help catching rats. Thomsen Eldevig says the dog has a strong sense of smell and, when he detects a rat, digs down to it and destroys its nest.
On Monday evening, Asterix was called to Viðareiði after a rat was seen near a small animal enclosure by the old Viðareiði road, close to the village. Farmer Irena Sørensen had contacted them after her husband spotted the rat.
Asterix clearly detected the rat and began digging, but there was no catch this time because the rat was no longer there. It is unlikely to be the last time he is called out for such a task.
