Psychiatrist Roope Bob Tikkanen cleared of attempted murder charges after car incident in Helsinki Market Square
A psychiatrist, Roope Bob Tikkanen, who was convicted for the murder in Ullanlinna, will not face charges for attempted murder related to a car incident at the Helsinki Market Square. Reports indicate that prosecutors sought to annul a previous fine related to this case, citing numerous new pieces of evidence uncovered during the police investigation.
According to information from IS, the Supreme Court decided that the prosecutors’ appeal regarding the annulment of the fine would not be examined. The court noted that this was the second attempt by prosecutors to challenge the fine and emphasized that there was no compelling reason to rerun the investigation.
In 2023, Yle reported that Tikkanen cannot be charged with attempted murder, despite police suspicions that he intentionally drove into the sea with his family in the car. The Supreme Court’s ruling cited the principle of double jeopardy, which prevents the prosecution of a crime for which a person has already faced punishment.
For Tikkanen to face attempted murder charges for driving into the sea, the fine imposed for endangering traffic safety would need to be annulled first. In December 2021, he received a penalty of 16 fine days for that offense, which at the time was treated as an accident by the police.
The incident occurred in 2021 at Helsinki’s Market Square when Tikkanen drove a test-driven Volvo into the water at South Harbor, carrying his wife, four children, and the family dog. In August, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife in their shared home in December 2022, where he violently attacked her multiple times.
