Teachers in Reykjavik gathered in significant numbers outside the City Hall today to protest remarks made by Mayor Einar Þorsteinsson during a municipal finance conference last weekend. Einar criticized the increasing preparation time for teachers and the number of sick days taken, stating that statistics suggested an underlying issue in the education system. His comments have sparked widespread dissatisfaction among educators.

Kristín Björnsdóttir, the chairperson of the Reykjavik Teachers’ Association, voiced strong concerns at the protest. She characterized the mayor’s words as serious and lacking justification. “Words carry responsibility, and by speaking this way about teachers in a public forum, the mayor endorses a disrespectful attitude towards educators,” she stated, emphasizing that her comments represent the view of not only the Reykjavik Teachers’ Association but also the first tier of the preschool teachers’ union.

A large crowd attended, many carrying signs to express their support for their colleagues and to advocate for the value of teachers in the community. The protest reflects a growing tension between educators and city officials over issues of respect, working conditions, and educational policies.
