Left-Green Movement expresses discontent with Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson’s coalition decision in Iceland

Within the Left-Green Movement (VG), feelings towards Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson are predominantly negative following his abrupt decision to terminate the coalition government. Although VG had previously announced plans for this split next spring, Benediktsson’s actions are perceived as irresponsible.

Steinunn Rögnvaldsdóttir, one of the proponents for the dissolution at a recent VG congress, argued that while his decision might have seemed strategically sound from his perspective, it was detrimental to the nation’s welfare. She stated, “This decision was probably wise from his own interests. But I don’t think it is necessarily wise for the interests of society. […] He jumps out and only thinks of himself and his concerns.”

Álfheiður Ingadóttir, a former MP and minister from VG, echoed similar sentiments, describing it as a “one-man show,” expressing concern about Benediktsson’s desperation and hasty decision, which she believes could undermine efforts to lower interest rates in light of the ongoing economic challenges.

This internal division within VG emphasizes different viewpoints regarding collaborations with the Independence Party, with Steinunn favoring immediate dissolution while others, including Álfheiður, preferred to delay until spring to address significant issues. The party currently polls at 3%, which would not secure representation in parliament if elections were held today. In a recent radio interview, they discussed the implications of the governmental split and the future of the Left-Green Movement.
