Þorgerður calls for elections following government’s dissolution announcement in Iceland
Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, the chair of the Viðreisn party, has described the Prime Minister’s announcement regarding the government’s dissolution as the most sensible and beneficial decision made during the current term. She emphasized that elections are the only way to move past the political instability that has surrounded this administration.
“This was truly the only feasible and reasonable course of action,” she stated. While she cannot guarantee that peace will be achieved in Parliament by the end of November, when elections are scheduled, she noted the evident tension in the statements made by Svandís after the meeting with Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson.
“It is clear that there is more than just a rift between allies. History has shown that when Parliament has needed to accomplish necessary tasks, such as passing the budget, it has always managed to carry out its duties.”
As political tensions rise, various parties are taking preparatory steps for the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, discussions from the meeting of the ruling party leaders did not touch on Bjarni’s decision to call for elections.
Gunnarsdóttir’s comments reflect a broader sense of urgency within the political landscape, highlighting both the challenges faced by the current government and the role of Parliament in addressing pressing issues amid the unfolding political crisis.
