Pirate Party of Iceland prepares for elections after coalition’s dissolution

The Pirate Party of Iceland is gearing up for the upcoming elections following the announcement of the end of the current government coalition. Pirate Party parliamentary group leader Thorhildur Sunna responded positively to the coalition’s dissolution, highlighting that it has been overdue. She criticized Bjarni, the Prime Minister, for prolonging the government’s termination, describing it as irresponsible behavior.

In her view, establishing a new government can focus on matters significant to the nation. The Pirate Party intends to initiate preparations for primary elections this evening, with hopes of participating in a national election slated for about six weeks away.

The recent internal turbulence among coalition parties over immigration matters has amplified tensions, particularly within the Independence Party. Sunna revealed that unrest has been growing, prompting the party to assess its current standing. The decision regarding the elections was not discussed in a meeting among heads of government parties, further indicating ongoing political disputes.

The Prime Minister had announced a press conference, outlining plans for a quick transition toward elections.
