Nation’s midwives sign four-year wage agreement with government, introducing professional development system
Midwives in the nation have signed a four-year wage agreement with the government. The wage increase stipulated in the contract is in line with other public agreements, with a 3.25% wage increase this year and 3.5% next year.
Unnur Berglind Friðriksdóttir, Chair of the Midwives Association, has expressed satisfaction with the contract, describing it as responsible. “Of course, we always want to do better, but we also want to reduce inflation,” she said.
In addition to the wage increase, the agreement also includes the introduction of a professional development system across all health institutions. Until now, such a system has only been implemented at the National Hospital. Friðriksdóttir explains that this system will give midwives the opportunity for wage increases based on increased professional experience. “This leads to a broader wage structure. It has been somewhat flat until now.”
Details of the agreement will be presented to members of the Midwives Association in the coming days, and a vote is expected to start next Friday.
