The violent death of a toddler in Joensuu, which occurred in June of last year, is set to be reviewed by the Court of Appeal in November. The Eastern Finland Court of Appeal has scheduled three days for the case, from November 26 to 28, with hearings taking place in Kuopio.
The court will address appeals from the prosecutor, the convicted mother of the child, the child’s biological father, and the child’s grandmother concerning the District Court’s ruling. The four-year-old child was found dead at home in the Rantakylä district of Joensuu, having suffered extensive burns and bruises.
Earlier, the North Karelia District Court convicted the mother and her partner. The partner, Sebastian Simon Daniel Halonen, was sentenced to seven years and nine months in prison for aggravated assault, manslaughter, drug offenses, and inciting theft. His conviction has been finalized since June.
The mother, Muusa Tuulia Katariina Rissanen, received a sentence of three years and seven months for aggravated manslaughter, theft, and drug offenses. She is requesting the Court of Appeal to dismiss the charges of aggravated manslaughter and all related claims, and she is seeking a reduction in her sentence to probationary terms, along with immediate release.
On the other hand, prosecutor Osmo Manninen argues that the mother should also be convicted of assault and that her sentence should be increased, stating that her actions contributed to the child’s death despite the injuries having been inflicted by the partner.
Additionally, appeals from the child’s biological father and grandmother regarding compensation claims will also be reviewed.
