Frydnes to announce 2024 Nobel Peace Prize recipient at Nobel Institute in Oslo
Jørgen Watne Frydnes, the new chair of the Nobel Committee, will announce the recipient of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize at 11:00 AM on October 11. The announcement will take place at the Nobel Institute in Oslo, where the prize honors individuals or organizations that have contributed to global peace efforts.
Last year, the award was given to Iranian journalist and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, who is currently imprisoned. Her children, Ali and Kiana Rahmani, read her words during the ceremony.
At noon, peace doves will be released from the windows of the Nobel Peace Center to signify the announcement of this year’s laureate.
The Nobel Peace Prize, according to Alfred Nobel’s will, should be awarded to the person or organization that has worked most effectively for fraternity among nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the promotion of peace congresses. Throughout its history, the prize has recognized a wide variety of peace initiatives but has also been withheld 19 times, especially during major wars, when there were no suitable candidates.
Initially awarded to pioneers of the organized peace movement before World War I, the focus shifted in the interwar period to active politicians and humanitarian efforts. Post-World War II, the prize has primarily recognized contributions in areas such as arms control, peace mediation, democracy, and human rights, as well as initiatives addressing environmental threats and climate change in the 21st century.
Nominations for the peace prize can be made by various eligible groups including national parliament members and heads of state, members of the International Court of Justice, and past laureates. However, the Nobel Committee keeps the nominees’ identities confidential for 50 years.
