One in ten members of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) votes for other parties besides the Social Democrats. Despite this, LO contributes over four Swedish kronor per member to the Social Democrats each year. LO’s chairman, Johan Lindholm, has suggested that the organization may need to reconsider its support for the party.

“I, and many others, might think that it is quite outdated. This is something we need to examine,” he stated in an interview. Lindholm reports that many members are frustrated that part of their union fees automatically goes to a party they do not support. “It’s clear that people are angry,” he acknowledged.

In addition to the direct contributions, LO typically invests large amounts to support the Social Democrats during elections. For the 2022 election, LO reportedly allocated a record 50 million kronor on various campaigns aimed at ensuring an S-party victory. Lindholm does not view this financial support as problematic since it does not come directly from union members’ fees.

As union dynamics evolve, discussions surrounding political support and member satisfaction continue to be critical issues within LO.
