A new nationwide survey has found that 26 per cent of people in the Faroe Islands have experienced sexual abuse, KVF reports. The findings were presented at a conference organised by KRIS at the Nordic House on Tuesday.
Lóður conducted the survey for KRIS, with 1,000 people over the age of 18 taking part. Most respondents said the abuse first happened when they were under 18.
The survey also found that many people do not tell anyone about the abuse they have experienced, even though it can have serious consequences and affect them well into adulthood.
Erling Fles, a psychologist with KRIS, said parents should speak openly and without judgment to children about the issue, so they do not feel that talking to an adult is wrong or foolish.
