Albert Guðmundsson acquitted of sexual assault charges by Reykjavik District Court

Albert Guðmundsson, a professional football player, celebrated his acquittal on Instagram, stating, “Innocent!” He was found not guilty of sexually assaulting a woman, with the ruling issued by the Reykjavik District Court. Albert did not attend the court’s announcement, as he resides in Florence for work commitments.

In his statement, he expressed that he always believed he would be deemed innocent and felt relieved by the verdict. He noted the difficulties of the past year and the impact on his mental health, also emphasizing his unwavering stance against violence. He hopes the case will not negatively affect the cause of women who are true victims of violence.

The victim’s legal representative commended her courage, highlighting that the ruling does not change her personal experience. “Criminal cases only address whether strict conditions are met to convict someone,” said Eva Bryndís Helgadóttir, the victim’s legal advocate. She acknowledged the distress such cases can cause victims, especially when public figures are involved.

Eva concluded by stating that the victim in this case has shown remarkable bravery and resilience and should serve as a role model to other victims.
